Midgley clear at the top

Midgley United are playing catch-us-if-you-can with their rivals in the top section of the Halifax AFL after making it three wins out three.

Craig Gee’s side have a day off on Saturday and can reflect on a perfect start to the season, which has included derby successes over Hebden Royd Red Star and Calder ‘76.

They have a three-point lead which the other 100 per cent sides, Stump Cross and Shelf United, will be trying to bridge at the weekend.

Midgley shook off the absences of three key men to make visitors Copley United their latest victims, crushing them 7-2.

Skipper Andrew Butterworth, goal ace George Bamford and Greg Spink were on holiday in Thialand but it made little difference as Gee’s side dominated throughout.

However, Midgley struggled to make their superiority show on the scoresheet until the last 25 minutes, when they added four goals without reply.

Copley took the lead against the run of play with a penalty and that unsettled Midgley for a short time but Jason Cartlidge made it 1-1 following a corner, controlling with his chest and firing into the roof of the net.

A superb strike from Rob Stansfield, who sent the ball looping over the ‘keeper from 18 yards into the top corner, and a Toby Standring goal, after he had latched on to Cartlidge’s through ball, made it 3-1 at the break.

Copley got a second against the run of play after ‘keeper Steve Butterworth was unable to cling onto the ball but Standring restored the two-goal gap after going through one-on-one with the keeper.

A Calum Rodgers back post header and a goal from Calum Wheelwright with his first touches put more daylight between the sides and Stansfield completed the scoring with a low, hard drive into the corner from the edge of the box.

Midgley Reserves completed a fine weekend for the club, picking up their first points since their unexpected promotion with a 3-0 win away to Halifax Irish Centre.

Their marksmen were Sam Sharkey, Matthew Thompson and Darren Nelson.
