Gee demands improvement from Midgley

Midgley United boss Craig Gee admitted it is back to the drawing board after watching his side tumble out of the Halifax FA Saturday Cup 3-1 at the hands of Division One side Mixenden United last weekend.

Gee described it as a “very disappointing” day and will demand his players pick themselves up for a Premier Division clash with lowly Elland United this coming Saturday.

Midgley took the lead against promotion-gunning Mixenden and created enough chances to have won the tie handsomely.

However, their finishing let them down badly with Gee adding that they never looked like pulling the game back once the home side had established a lead.

“We should have been four or five goals up in the first half, but we failed to take our chances and that is what cost us,” said Gee. “We went a goal up and were totally in control at that point.

“Mixenden then scored from a penalty, which was a little dubious, but that is the way football goes.

“That made it 1-1 and served to give them some belief.

“They then went 2-1 up and after that defended very well.”

Midgley had targeted good cup runs this season so their Challenge Cup derby with Calder 76 in a couple of weeks takes on added significance.

“That has now become a massive game for us,” added Gee. “I fancied our chances in the District Cup this year but it isn’t to be.

“The Challenge Cup is realistically our last chance for honours. Although we are top of the Premier I think that is possibly one step ahead of us at the moment if I am being honest.

Gee is expecting to be at full strength this weekend where he will look for an improvement.

“We need to sharpen up when chasing games,” he said. “When we went behind last weekend we had no pattern, no width and ran out of ideas.”
