Burnley fans were over the (blue) moon after their side notched their most important win over Manchester City since the night they clinched the title at Maine Road in 1960, writes John Greenwood

It eclipsed the FA Charity Shield win of the early 70s and took the sting out of numerous drubbings at City’s hands when the two teams’ paths have crossed in the 30 odd years since.

Most importantly, it was three precious Premier League points, and two thirds of the way through the toughest of runs, Clarets are still in there fighting, just one place adrift of safety.

It doesn’t get much easier with the away date at Southampton on Saturday, but this proved, with top performances in this style - there is hope.
