SATURDAY saw the staging of the long-awaited 2008 Three Peaks Race which, this year, incorporated the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge as well as being an English Championship Race.
Runners from 20 different countries took part and more than twice the normal number of runners competed - 754 finished.

The race was won by Jethro Lennox (Shettleston Harriers) in 2:53:39 and the first woman was Anna Pichrtova (Czech Rep) in 3:14:43 beating the old course record by over a minute and a half.

There were two remarkable local performances from Calder Valley Fell Runners.

Karl Gray finished seventh beating some of the best in the business and the majority of the foreign runners.

Helen Fines was the eighth woman to finish after a tremendously determined run and again beating many of the foreign runners.

Team mates Adam Breaks and Ben Mounsey also ran very well too to finish 26th and 50th respectively in 3.12.53 and 3.23.14.

Calder Valley ladies had the satisfaction of being the first British team thanks to the efforts of ever-consistent trio Fines, Sally Newman, (154th, 3.47.04) and Jo Waites (158th, 3.47.55).
