Valley runners reach new heights in Wuthering challenge

CALDER Valley runners achieved good results in the Wuthering Hike race on Saturday.
The route is a strenuous 33 miler, starting and finishing in Haworth and passing through Hebden Bridge and Todmorden and alongside several reservoirs high up on the moors.
Race winner was Matt Giles from Stourbridge in the West Midlands in a time of
4.06.43, hotly pursued by Calder Valley runner Adam Breaks in 4.09.04.
Adam had the consolation however that his race record time of 3.43.24 from last year is still intact. The 100km World Champion Liz Hawker was first lady home in 4.36.54.
Other notable successes for Calder Valley were: 2nd team and 12th overall, Jason Stevens of Sowerby Bridge and Mytholmroyd's Richard Greenwood in 4.47.58; 1st ladies pair Thirza Hyde and Barbara Lonsdale in 6.29; 1st mixed pair Bill and Anne Johnson of Luddenden in 5.24.20.
Also on Sunday a group travelled down to Crowden near Glossop in the Peak District for the 'Lads Leap' fell race. In all 197 started this six mile run and Calder finishers were as follows: In 13th place Stephen Smithies in a time of 53.15; 40th James Horne 57.12; 41st Graham Hill 57.22; 59th Rob Sharratt 59.59; 60th Graham Lloyd 59.59; 82nd Mike Wardle 63.51; 101st Claire Hanson 66.45; 116th Dave Culpan 69.55; 117th Martin Whitehead 69.56; 125th Jeremy Wilkinson 71.05; 128th Dave Beston 71.39; 139th Claire Fothergill 73.38; 151st John Riley 75.23. The race was won by Lloyd Taggart of the Dark Peak club in a time of 45.51.
