HEDLEY Metcalf and Harry Cooper were back playing starring roles almost half a century after hanging up their boots.
The duo were members of Heptonstall FC's 1944/45 side. The club transformed into what is now Hebden Royd Red Star and the ex-players were among over 200 who gathered at Mytholmroyd Community Centre to celebrate the club's centenary.

The evening was the culmination of a series of celebratory events which included the publication of Peter Thomas' excellent history of the club, A Century Of Stars.

Red Star began as Heptonstall FC before a move of ground prompted the name change.

Hedley and Harry were presented with special commemorative medals on the night.

Peter Kennedy – whose own connection with the club goes back to 1958 – said: "It was an absolutely superb night, a night when old friendships were renewed and new ones made.

"One lad travelled back from Portugal while we had people travelling from Bradford, Leeds and Liverpool as well as those who never strayed too far from the local area.

"It was the perfect evening to mark our centenary year and I would like to thank everyone who attended and helped to organise the evening."
