HEBDEN Bridge Golf Club's Scratch team played their latest fixture at a wild and windy Meltham GC.
The fixture was, on paper, a tough one as all four Meltham players hold a two handicap and with young guns Adam Cryer and George Bamford missing, it was down to the old guard of Iain Powell, Paul Richardson, Jonathan Sutcliffe and club veteran John G
umbley to tackle the Meltham team.
Hebden quickly signalled their intentions, Powell teeing off first in the top game drove to the front edge of the green on the 360 yard first hole. A birdie followed as he took control of his game, running out a 5&4 winner against fellow Union player Graham McCleans.
In game number two team captain Paul Richardson was out of sorts. His normal steady, straight drives are hit with a touch of draw but Paul developed a weak fade off the tee and struggled to penetrate the blustery conditions. He was eventually beaten 6&5 by Anton Shears.
The windy conditions didn't help Jonathan Sutcliffe's rhythmical swing either, he was quickly behind his opponent Roger Hunt and admitted to feeling nervous through the front nine.
Sutty was mounting a comeback turning for home and with his opponent buried in a greenside on the 15th he was favourite to pull another hole back. Unfortunately his tee shot couldn't be located and despite a return to play a second ball he succumbed 3&2.
Astin the pick of Rick's day
Despite a rather damp and blustery day at Mount Skip there was an excellent turnout of nearly 100 golfers to play in vice captain Rick Pickles' competition day.
The winner with 39 points was Martin Astin who was one of the early starters and had to contend with playing in an almost constant drizzle and one heavy downpour of rain.
His one piece of good fortune in protecting this score was the fact that the wind picked up in the afternoon making conditions even more difficult for those who prefer their Saturday mornings at home.
Such conditions were reflected by the fact that most of the other main prize winners came from the early starters, Mally Marsden coming second on countback from Skip's number one golfer Iain Powell with 37 points, nearest the pin in two shots on the par four sixth hole was Neil Clegg (16 inches).
The only golfer to buck this trend playing in the afternoon was Phil Shaw for the best net back nine of 20 points, club lady captain Carolyn Harrison winning the nine-hole ladies competition with 14 points.
The guest prize was won by Andy Hansen with an impressive 38 points, who no doubt put to good use his previous knowledge of the course from when he was a member. The popular vice-captain, affectionately known as Rick Pick, kindly provided plenty of food and drinks for the golfers, rounding his big day off with a live band at the evening function playing 60's music much to the satisfaction of the old giffer, George Dobby.
