ROYD rounded off the West Riding First Division Mini League in style — league champions, unbeaten and with a goal difference of plus 17.
Last game of the season was against Leeds Medics and Dentists newly promoted to the Premier League.

Hebden again had to rearrange their squad and Leanne Smith found herself in goal.

Defenders Rebecca McMahon, Sarah Clegg, Dani Hayes and Ami Roberts were initially given the run around by one very pacy forward and another very tall.

They must have thought they had Crouch and Rooney against them.

Midfielders Rosie Duke, Alison Morrison, Naomi Hills and Holly Barwick got in to their stride and began to pass the ball well up to front runners Emma Whiteley and Ros Parker.

This was quite a physical battle and all of Duke's experience and power was required to marshal the attacks.

Pressure resulted in a corner taken by Barwick and met by the head of Hills and then the head of Duke to put Hebden in front on 25 mins.

However, not surprisingly the Leeds side did not give up and a corner by them was met by the head of the tall centre forward and found the corner of the net.

Five minutes later the visiting speedy forward left the defenders and despite a brave effort from Smith put Leeds in front.

Hebden rallied and Emma Whiteley showed why she has been top goal scorer levelling the scores with a 25 yard cracker. Rosie Duke's battling persistence paid off when she tapped in at a goalmouth scramble and at half time Hebden were 3-2 up.

An injury to Clegg saw a big change around. Top scorer Whiteley went in goal and Smith moved to midfield, whilst Emily Holroyde, sporting a back injury, joined Parker up front.

It was Holroyde's unconventional style with one hand supporting her back that baffled the defence and won a corner. Hills met the corner with a firm header and Hebden went 4-2 up.

Ros Parker tried a speculative shot from the left wing that fooled everyone as the ball dribbled over the line. She was then cheeky enough to try the same shot again within ten minutes and was rewarded with a second goal.

Veteran Kathy McMahon replaced her daughter, Rebecca, with ten minutes to go and showed why she is a stalwart of the club.

Just one more goal came — Leanne Smith got her goal and Hebden’s seventh from six yards.

The ladies celebrated in the Brandy Wine afterwards and much thanks go to Martyn and Louise for their support and suppers through the season. Hebden Royd will continue to train through the summer months on Tuesday evenings at Luddenden Foot and all are welcome.
