A LOCAL footballer has made it into The Guinness Book of Records for his prowess at throw-ins.
Danny Brooks has been confirmed as having the longest throw in football after the 28-year-old former gymnast managed to throw a football 79.78 metres (54 yards).
He used a "flip throw" technique in which he somersaults with the ball while keeping within the rules. His super throw means he can throw a ball from the touchline beyond the penalty area or from the halfway line into the penalty box on many pitches.
The Midgley United player – who lives in Southowram and is a PE technician in Elland, said he knew he was close to the world record so felt he should try for it and a comment from his wife made him realise the uniqueness of his achievement.
"My wife, Stephanie, said 'you are the best in the world at something'."
Danny said the record took a lot of hard work, determination and organisation.
"Not many people get the opportunity to be best in the world at something," he said.
"I did not do it for commercial reasons and if someone beats my record tomorrow I'm not one of those who feels he has to break it again.
"I have got the official certificate as a souvenir along with the ball I threw and I will probably have that put in a glass case."
He plays for Midgley in the Halifax Premier Division and the odd referee has been unsure of the legality of the throw, but by keeping his feet on the ground and the ball behind his head when releasing the football he keeps within the rules.
Arnie Thorpe and Phil Bolton, both referees affiliated with the West Riding County FA, and Calder High School teacher Mary Smith, recorded his longest throw at Midgley's Rec ground.
Danny will now have to wait and see if he makes it into The Guinness Book of Records as the sheer volume of records means not all can be published.
Professionally Stoke City's Rory Delap is famed for his long throws, which have caused havoc among Premiership defences and the previous record was 48.17 metres by Michael Lochner achieved in Ohio in 1998.
