Salem 3
Wadsworth United 4
Halifax FA Albert Crabtree Cup round 2 aet
UNITED overcame torrential rain and opponents two divisions above them to progress to the third round of the cup.
Their reward is a trip to Natty Lane to face West Riding county amateur league side Ovenden WR.
After the sides could not be separated after 90 minutes it fell to prolific hitman Johnny Gibson to settle the tie and avoid the need for a penalty shootout.
Up the slope, but with the wind behind, them Wadsworth started brightly but with both sides giving little away attempts on goal were limited.
Wadsworth opened the scoring with the first real chance of the game, a well worked move down the left saw Gibson cross for Marsden to slip the ball underneath the on rushing keeper.
As Salem stepped up the pace they found the Wadsworth defence of Stansfield, Lawless and the Sim brothers in defiant mood. Whitehead missed a great chance to put the visitors two up before parity was restored as a ball over from the right fell kindly for a Salem midfielder following up to bring the scores level.
Wadsworth once again went ahead after some slick interchanges between Cartwright and Whitehead resulted in the former swinging over a cross which was headed into his own net by an unlucky Salem defender.
With half time approaching it was important for Wadsworth to hold out till the break but they failed to do so, the full back was not closed down fast enough on the right and his cross was bundled in at the far post to send the sides in at half time all square.
Salem took the lead at the start of the second half from a corner that was forced home on the line with Howarth under pressure. Wadsworth kept their composure and reorganised throwing more men forward as they sought the equaliser.
Horn forced a fantastic save by the Salem keeper and Whitehead stealing in at the far post was unfortunate to see his header go straight at the keeper. At the other end Jamie Howarth pulled off to outstanding saves to keep Wadsworth in the game.
Finally the pressure told as Staroszczuk rounded his marker before slotting the ball into the corner to take the game into extra time.
Tired legs were all to evident in added time and it was United's superior fitness that told with Gibson, a handful throughout, leaving his marker trailing in his wake as he cut in from the left and drilled his right foot shot low into the far corner to send Wadsworth through to the next round.
