THIS Calderdale League Cup semi-final got under way with Saints playing down hill on this sloping pitch.

Midfielders Seb Holmes, Josh Highley, Jack Crabtree and Joe Elwin controlled the game, keeping Warley pe
nned into their own half.

When Warley did break out defenders Jared Brooks, Jay Glover, Tom Barclay and Sam Rowntree were there to snuff the attack out.

Saints came close to opening the score with several close calls and finally took advantage of their domination when a terrific strike on target by Joe Elwin rebounded off the goalkeeper for Cieran Taylor to slot away.

As the second half got underway Taylor was pulled down in the penalty area and Highley calmly placed the penalty kick into the top right hand corner.

As the game progressed Warley announced their intention to fight to the bitter end when from a precise corner cross they scored to bring them right back into the game.

With Jake Grannan and Ryan Roberts trying to put the game beyond Warley it was left to Saints defenders to deal with attack after attack. Richard Roberts, in goal for Saints, pulled off a terrific save to deny Warley an equaliser.

For Saints, Crabtree shot just wide of the post before Roberts cut open the Warley defence with a ball to Elwin who shot across goal, burying it in the far corner, securing Saints’ progress to the final at The Shay.
