Bowls: Warburton's a winner

DAVID Warburton won the Halifax League's Halifax Carpet Company-sponsored veterans handicap at Kingston SC with a 21-18 victory over John Hartley of Hebden Royd Park.
The Mytholmroyd BC man now holds both veterans trophies, having lifted the pairs crown with Peter Collins last year.
For Hartley it was his second successive final defeat having lost to Trevor Hargreaves in 2008.Warburton began with a 21-5 quarter-f
inal victory over Bill Robson of Akroydon Victoria before beating Shroggs Park's Derek Squires in the semi-final.
Hartley's first game was a repeat of last year's final against Crossroads' Hargreaves but this time he recovered from 15-9 down to win 21-20.
Hartley made a better start in his semi-final against Brian Tyson, of Hove Edge, leading by 9-3 before Tyson drew level at 12. Hartley moved ahead again by 18-13 but Tyson levelled again at 19 before Hartley edge through.
In the final, Warburton led 8-2 and pulled steadily ahead to establish a lead of 18-10, but, this time, was unable to complete the job as Warburton claimed the last two singles to win by 21-19.
