CALDER Valley Fell Runners found themselves caught up in controversy at the English and British Fell Running Championships on June 20.
Allegations that some of the leading men had not visited one of the mandatory checkpoints delayed publication of the results from the competition, which attracted 315 runners to Tebay in Cumbria.
Once the dust had settled it became clear that the
Calder ladies had once again set the standards.
Helen Fines is currently in silver medal position in the British ladies with Anne Johnson in the same position in the British V40s. Blackshawhead school teacher Jo Waites is in bronze position in the English championships - and with so many ladies placed highly in the individual championships it's no surprise that the club's ladies top both the English and British tables.
Karl Gray and Ben Mounsey continue to fly the Calder flag for the men with Karl currently sixth in the British standings and Ben ninth.
New recruit Gavin Mulholland ran a very impressive race in his first year of competitive fell racing and with this performance there are growing signs that the men are starting to get the same strength in depth that the ladies currently enjoy.
Calder results: Karl Gray 15th, 1:14:15; Ben Mounsey 23rd, 1:16:31; Gavin Mulholland 37th 1:20:31; Adam Breaks 62nd, 1:23:10; Helen Fines 106th, 1:28:21; Jo Waites 127th, 1:30:49; Anne Johnson 135th, 1:31:37; Dave Austin 157th, 1:34:59; Naomi Sharratt 166th, 1:36:09; Mark Goldie 180th 1:38:32; Thirza Hyde 235th, 1:48:50; Dave Culpan 240th, 1:49:38; Linda Murgatroyd 247th, 1:51:29; Martin Whitehead 265th, 1:54:42; Gail Tombs 282nd, 2:00:04)
