A rich reward

On Saturday we travelled from Harrogate for Hebden Bridge Band’s concert in Heptonstall Parish Church and we were richly rewarded with an eclectic programme of ancient and modern music faultlessly delivered under the measured yet purposeful baton of the newly appointed conductor and including some outstanding solo performances.

Remembering the band trudging the snowy Christmas streets of the town, led by the late Sam Townend over 60 years ago and a brief flirtation with the tenor horn under the tutelage of Dennis Mortimer of the brass dynasty, Saturday was live entertainment of the highest calibre – a point endorsed by praise from brass enthusiasts who had travelled from deepest Lancashire for the evening.

Supported by town folk and visitors, long may the band continue to flourish via its promising blend of skilled experience and youthful brilliance and with continuing success in future shows and contests.
