Gardeners in Midgley are busy preparing their gardens to welcome visitors this weekend for the popular biennial Open Gardens event.

This year over 20 gardens will be open to view from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15.

A great variety of gardens offer something of interest to everyone, with woodland and wildlife gardens, cosy courtyards, traditional cottage gardens and beautiful floral displays, all within a traditional Pennine village setting.

Many of the gardens are hidden away behind buildings and cannot normally be seen, and many offer spectacular views over the Calder Valley.

There will be plant sales and refreshments available at gardens throughout the village, and the Midgley Community Room will be open for lunches.

The Halifax Chamber Choir will sing in the garden at 21 Towngate on Sunday afternoon.

In addition to the gardens, a number of Midgley studios will be opening their doors for the weekend, offering the chance to view and buy artwork and knitwear from local artists and designers.

The event is organised by Midgley Community Forum and funds raised will go towards village projects.

Forum representative Anne Holdsworth said: “The Open Gardens weekend is always popular, with visitors coming from across Yorkshire and beyond, and all assured of a very warm welcome.

“Gardening can be quite a challenge up here on the edge of Midgley Moor but our gardeners have been working really hard to make sure their gardens will be looking at their very best.”

Tickets for the weekend and programmes giving full details of the gardens are available from Midgley shop, and from gardens on the weekend. Tickets cost £5 per person, with children admitted free. Tickets are valid for both days.

Gardens are marked with signs and balloons.
