A comment made on Facebook earlier this year reunited a group of ex-Calder High pupils to celebrate 50 years since starting at the school in 1966.

The group, who have dubbed themselves The Class Of ‘66, spent the evening in Mytholmroyd pub The Dusty Miller reminiscing about their school days.

Tim Walton, whose comment to Carole Adams (née Tyler) led to the reunion, said: “When we realised it was 50 years ago this year, we felt we ought to mark the occasion in some way - we didn’t want such a milestone to pass by unnoticed.”

The reunion kicked off with an informal tour around the school.

Carol, who now lives in Sheffield, said: “We were shown round by Andy McArdle, the site manager, who is an ex-pupil himself and is clearly passionate about the place.”

“We’d like to publicly thank him for his time and the wonderful tour he gave us: he was full of interesting facts and anecdotes.”

The group of 25 have moved into a wide range of professions, such as nursing, dentistry and law, and although some still live locally others have moved sligthly further afield.

Gillian Smith (née West) travelled the furthest to the reunion as she now lives on the Isle of Wight.

She said: “It was a wonderful evening. Some of us hadn’t seen each other since we left all those years ago.”

This isn’t the first time the group have reunited, as they got together back in 2009.

Julian Bailey, one of the key organisers of that reunion, said: “Tracking down the members of our year back then was quite a difficult task, so when Tim asked me if I could help out this time, I was happy to get involved for the ‘golden’ anniversary.

“It was quite a painstaking job to backtrack what information I had, but it was well worth it, especially when I saw how many people had turned up.”
