MEP holds successful Q&A Brexit meeting in Halifax

Amjad Bashir, Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, organised the public event at the Crossley Gallery, Dean Clough, titled ‘Global Britain - Stepping Out of the EU and Into the World’.

Mr Bashir was a prominent ‘leave’ campaigner, attending meetings all across the country, and is credited with bringing large numbers of ethnic minority voters in.

Joining him was Conservative MEP Andrew Lewer and businessman Steve Birdsall.

Mr Bashir praised the Prime Minister’s approach to the negotiation, saying: “The pressure she has come under from certain factions to detail every step of the Brexit strategy in recent weeks has been immense.

“As someone who worked in business previously for over 30 years, I know it would be foolish to announce plans of what you’re looking to get before sitting at the negotiation table.”

He said that despite dire warnings of the consequences of leaving the EU - the reality since June 23 had been a string of good-news stories.

This includes Nissan’s plans to build two new models in Sunderland, Facebook, IBM and Google were all expanding UK operations and the International Monetary Fund had predicted the UK to be fastest-growing of the G7 nations.

After the meeting, he said: “The referendum result gave us back our independence, but it was the start of a long process of disentangling ourselves from the EU’s rules, regulations, treaties and trade deals.

“The public are anxious to know how it will all play out.”
