The “most loved” dog in Hebden Bridge has been chosen as one of the top entries in a national competition.

Eight-year-old Labrador Lucy is listed as a front-runner in National Accident Helpline’s Wunderdogs awards.

The aim is to showcase the country’s most obedient and well-trained dogs as well as its cutest puppies.

Since being looked after by owner Nicole Fletcher, Lucy has lost 20kg and has had to be housetrained, socialised and taught all basic commands.

Nicole said: “Lucy is not as bright as some dogs, but as she has only been learning from five years old, we think she has come a long way.”

Lucy had never been on a lead or outside before but she now walks around 10 miles every day.

Nicole added: “Everyone knows Lucy and she goes round the shops to be fussed over, she has play dates with friends every day and she loves everyone.

“She loves to carry things and often grabs other dogs’ leads and walks round with them.”

The competition is being run in partnership with vet charity PDSA.

New entries can be submitted until August 10. Prizes include a luxury dog hamper, puppy training classes and a £100 PDSA gift card.

National Accident Helpline will donate £1 to PDSA for every entry received.
