Swift response averts flood in nick of time
Council workers and others help to clear up mid-afternoon on New Year's Eve 2012 as another disaster is averted by prompt action (NPT picture)
A RAPID response from council workers and traders averted another flooding disaster when heavy rain washed mud and leaves into Hebden Bridge as people grabbed last-minute groceries.
Shopkeepers joined a Calderdale Council task force in wielding brooms to sweep away debris that was blocking drains in Market Street and threatening to overwhelm several businesses on New Year’s Eve.
A combination of swift action and an easing back of the rain resulted in hard-pressed traders – many of whom had only just got back on their feet after the summer floods – breathing a sigh of relief as the water drained away in the nick of time.
Officers of the upper Calder Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team took this dramatic picture in the afternoon just before people armed with brushes, quickly followed by the arrival of council drain-cleaning vehicles and road sweepers, freed up the gulleys and allowed the water to escape.
