Second chance to shine at Olympics for Frank
A FORMER weightlifter is set to put the Calder Valley on the Olympic map for a second time.
Frank Rothwell, who lives in Hebden Bridge, has been given a conditional offer to carry the Olympic Torch as it winds its way through Britain next year.
Frank, a former champion weightlifter who represented Ireland at the Munich Olympics in 1972, said he didn’t know in which part of the country he would be carrying the famous flame, but hoped it would be in Halifax on Sunday, June 24.
“I really didn’t expect this. When you think of the amount of nominations there was, it’s amazing,” said Frank, who is also a former Yorkshire and English weightlifting champion.
“I’m delighted to be representing Hebden Bridge and it will give the people of the town a bit more interest in the Games. This will help make the people of Hebden Bridge part of the Olympics in 2012.”
Frank is one of 8,000 people who will carry the torch for 300 metres on its 70 day journey around the country and he said it will be a great occasion for all his family and friends.
“My family are immensely proud and delighted. My seven grandchildren are of an age now where they can appreciate it,” said the 75-year-old.
“Although they didn’t know me when I was actually active in my sport, they can enjoy it this time.
“It’s wonderful that 40 years after I competed in Munich, I’m now getting the opportunity to be part of the 2012 Olympics. I’ve been involved in weightlifting now for 60 years and it’s a wonderful way to round off a sporting career.”
Frank was nominated by Michael Snee, chairman of the Halifax and District Irish Society, after the Federation of Irish Societies contacted their members inviting nominations. Mr Snee said that Frank has done a lot of work in the community.
“I’d like to thank Michael and the Irish Society for nominating me and giving me this fantastic opportunity,” added Frank.
Every offer of a torchbearer place is subject to passing the required background checks and Frank should receive final confirmation of his place by March 2012.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, said: “We are one step closer to giving thousands of people their moment to shine during the Olympic Torch Relay next summer.”
