A SCHOOL has come out of special measures and is on the right track to continue to improve, according to Ofsted.

Following an inspection in April 2010, Luddenden Dene Junior, Infant and Nursery School was judged to be inadequate, with many aspects of the school’s provision criticised.

Since then it has been visited five times by inspectors - most recently in July this year - to monitor its progress and Ofsted now believes it no longer requires special measures.

In his report, Her Majesty’s Inspector John Young said: “Leaders’ good direction of teaching, effective management of performance and a raft of successful improvement measures have enabled the school to tackle the deep-rooted weaknesses that have afflicted it.

“The influence of governance is good and local authority support has been effective.

“Leaders know they must sustain this momentum of progress if the school is to improve further.”

Achievement and the impact of teaching were judged to be satisfactory and improving.

Inspectors found pupils’ attitudes to learning and their behaviour and safety to be good overall.

Lisa Hoyle, who was seconded from Warley Town School in June 2010 and has now been appointed as permanent headteacher, is pleased with the report’s findings.

“It’s been a real journey and everyone’s hard work and commitment have transformed the school into a vibrant, happy and successful learning environment,” she said.

“The staff, pupils, parents, governors and local authority have worked very hard to improve the school.

“The whole school community is very proud of what we have achieved and feel excited about our future.

“All teaching seen during the inspection was ‘good’ and the report highlights the need for improvement work in this area to continue, to ensure our pupils achieve the very best and to make up for unsatisfactory teaching in the past.

“We will enjoy celebrating our success and are determined to raise standards even further over the coming months.”
