Review of 2010: October

HEBDEN Bridge and Mytholmroyd had a lucky escape from serious flooding after tremendous downpours hit the the Calder Valley.

The heavy rains brought chaos to neighbouring Walsden,Todmorden but eased just in time to save the River Calder bursting its banks in both local towns. Ironically it was surface water not the river which caused flooding on the A646 road at Callis and Mytholm, plus partially along Market Street in Hebden Bridge.

Tourism was top of the agenda at a meeting of leading local businesses in Hebden Bridge. Around 40 companies attended the Welcome to Yorkshire-run event.

A film about drugs and alcohol in Hebden Bridge was to be used across the country to improve help for addicts. Halifax and Calderdale Samaritans organised a screening of “Shed Your Tears and Walk Away” at Hebden Bridge cinema last month in the hope of strengthening links between different organisations in the area who could offer support for people with drink and drug problems. The film made by Jez Lewis, who grew up in Hebden Bridge was to be used to achieve the same in other areas.

Thousands flocked to the three day 2010 Ted Hughes Festival held in various venues in Mytholmroyd - the birth place of the world renowned poet.

Organised by the Elmet Trust the festival was seen as such a success that the trust was to look for a permanent base in the village rather than using the temporary venues.

The Queens Award for Voluntary Service - the MBE for Voluntary Groups was presented to the Ground Floor Project by the Lord Lieutenant Ingrid Roscoe. The prestigious honour was given in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of Ground Floor’s many years of service to the local community.

Actions spoke louder than words when friends and relatives held a vigil for the late Patrick Munsie in St George’s Square, Hebden Bridge. No words were spoken by the more than 100 people in attendance, but flowers were lit in memory of 18 year old Patrick, a former Calder High School pupil, who died in a car crash in Colorado, while on a gap year.

A local consortium was formed to try and prevent Hebden Bridge Picture House falling victim to Calderdale Council cuts. One possibility up for discussion was for the transfer of the cinema to local ownership in a bid to secure its long term future.
