YOUNGSTERS in the upper Calder Valley showed their spots and earned their stripes as they raised lots of money for Children in Need.

Fancy dress was the uniform and special fundraising activities were on the timetable at the schools as pupils and staff did their bit to support Pudsey bear on his big day.

At Castle Hill Primary School, Todmorden, the school council organised hooplas, cake stalls, a raffle and a penalty shootout, raising a total of £730.

All the staff and pupils at Burnley Road Academy, Mytholmroyd, came “dressed for bed” and raised more than £200.

Headteacher Pam Saville said: “To end the day, in our Friday awards assembly, the staff performed a song and dance routine to the Robbie Williams single ‘Candy’ in their pyjamas with teddy bears, lollies and dummies to the delight and a tremendous cheer from the children and parents who attended.”

The bedtime theme was continued at Cragg Vale Junior and Infant School, where pupils came to lessons dressed in their pyjamas.

There were princesses, Power Rangers, policemen, doctors, nurses, footballers and even Einstein at Ferney Lee Primary School, Todmorden, as children came dressed up as their heroes.

At Calder High School, students raised £200 by selling buns and biscuits during break and lunchtime.

Each class at St Joseph’s Primary School, Todmorden, took part in a range of different activities including making and selling Pudsey biscuits, badges and a treasure map, culminating with a “wear something spotty” non-uniform day.

They raised a grand total of £115.

At Walsden St Peter’s School, children donated games, books and toys for a bring and buy sale.

Headteacher Peter Stevenson said: “Everything was then put on sale for 50p and the children had fun shopping while raising money to help those in need.”
