Plumber Danny takes the plunge!

BIG-HEARTED plumber Danny Payne will get that sinking feeling later this month - but it’s for a good cause.

The newly married former firefighter will be hurling himself out of an aeroplane for a charity skydive.

And the high-flying adventure is all down to his wife Helen, who paid for the jump as a surprise wedding gift.

The proceeds from the skydive will go to Overgate Hospice, Elland, which provides a range of patient and family support services for people with an advanced or progressive illness. Its running costs are £2.3 million a year - the equivalent of £5,000 per day.

Danny, 38, who was born and bred in Hebden Bridge where most of his family still live, said: “I have always wanted to do a skydive and it was on my ‘to do’ list before I’m the ‘big 40’, along with a bungee jump and a few other things.

“It was a great surprise. Helen’s mum, Linda Parkin, and her aunts Christine Richards and Mo Allen all do voluntary work at Overgate Hospice so it seemed like a good reason to do the jump for that charity.”

Danny and Helen, who live at Low Laithes, Sowerby Bridge, were married at the end of June at the Anvil Hall in Gretna, Scotland, surrounded by close family and friends.

Danny, a former Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd retained firefighter, said: “There was only supposed to be six of us but it ended up as 25 in total. It made for a great wedding.”

And his joy was complete when Helen revealed her special wedding gift - allowing him to drop from the sky in a tandem dive at Bridlington on Saturday, September 22, weather permitting.

She said: “If you are going to do it, you might as well do it for a good cause.”

Danny, who runs Danny Payne Plumbing, carries out bathroom conversions for old, disabled and infirm people on contract to Jephson Housing, Pennine Housing and Hanover Housing.

So far he has raised more than £300 in sponsorship and would love to raise £1,000. People can donate at http://www.justgiving.com/Danny-Paynes-Wedding-jump
