Performing arts centre is one step closer

Hebden Bridge Light Opera Society has been given control of one of the town’s biggest eyesores.

Calderdale Council has given the society a 40-year lease of Youth House on Carlton Street, which has stood empty for nearly 15 years,

The society plans to transform the building into a £350,000 performing arts centre, but Hebden Royd Deputy Mayor Karl Boggis, who is leading the bid, said the full funding is still to be secured.

“We’re overjoyed to get a 40-year lease. A lot of work has been done to get it this far.”

A number of organisations will be based in Youth House, including the society, Hebden Bridge Brass Band, Hebden Bridge TV Company and Glusburn Theatre School for young people and vulnerable adults.

Calderdale Council’s Leader, Councillor Tim Swift, said: “I’m delighted that Youth House is going to be put to good use in the heart of the community after being empty for a number of years.”
