Top award: Special PC Omer Ayub

An Calderdale-based acting section officer has been rewarded for his outstanding commitment to keeping his community safe.

Upper Valley Acting Section Officer Omer Ayub was named “special constable of the year” at the annual West Yorkshire Policing Awards.

The awards “recognise exceptional performance within the force”, under categories such as extraordinary public service, protection of vulnerable victims, crime investigation and bravery.

Speaking about A/SO Ayub’s service to his community, a police spokesperson said: “Nothing is ever too much trouble for Omer, an Acting Section Officer who has taken on his role with outstanding commitment.”

A spokesperson for the Upper Valley NPT said: “We are proud to report that Upper Calder Valley Section Officer Omer Ayub won the prestigious award of Special Constable of the year.

“Further testament to his hard work as a member of our special constabulary, Omer was also recently promoted from Special Constable to Section Officer.

“His tireless work and dedication to giving up his own time week in and week out to make a difference across the upper Calder Valley mean this award is very well deserved.”

Paying tribute to all the finalists, Chief Constable Mark Gilmore said he wanted to pay tribute to all those officers and staff who work tirelessly, all year round, to keep their communities safer and feeling safer.

“Never forgetting their families and friends, the unsung heroes, who support them to put their best foot forward for our magnificent policing service,” he added.

Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns Williamson said: “We have been privileged to hear accounts of courage, commitment and dedication, and all finalists should be exceptionally proud of their achievements.

“Despite the challenges officers and staff face, day in day out, they continue to deliver an exceptional service, which is undoubtedly recognised by our partners, local communities and certainly by me as the Police and Crime Commissioner.”
