SCHOOLS are being encouraged to ensure their pupils have access to above average fresh, nutritious and healthy meals as part of a new partnership scheme.

NHS Calderdale’s public health team has linked up with the Food for Life Partnership to improve children and young people’s learning and health chances through provision of good food and good education.

Leon Ballin, a part-time project manager, is working closely with schools and the wider community to develop the programme. During autumn, training events will be available to support teachers on all aspects of the Food for Life work including cooking, gardening and visiting farms.

Gaynor Scholefield, NHS Calderdale public health manager, said: “We have already been able to see the benefits of the Food for Life Partnership programme through a number of schools in the area that are already enrolled in the national programme.

“As a result of the success in these schools and their proven positive impact on children’s health and improving education, we felt the Food for Life Partnership would be the ideal partner to support two of our key health and well-being priorities: to ensure that Calderdale children are safe, happy, confident and ready for school, and that Calderdale is a place where children and young people are ready for life.”

Many schools in the borough are already enrolled in the programme.

Helen Plaice, headteacher at Todmorden High School, said: “The Food for Life Partnership is a significant partner in helping us to improve our school. We have used the cultures of healthy eating and of sustainable food sources to ensure the school has strong links with our community.

“We now have local, national and international visitors. That has given our school community an increased sense of confidence and pride which, along with the enthusiasm and commitment of Food for Life colleagues, has provided us with the direction we needed.”
