Overseas twins do their bit to help area’s flood victims
Flood victims in Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale are set to get a boost thanks to foreign friends.
Hebden Royd’s twin town of Warstein, in Germany, has given 1,850 euros to the Community Foundation For Calderdale (CFFC), and the area’s other twin town of St Pol, France, has promised to add to the pot.
The money was presented in front of a capacity crowd at Hebden Bridge Town Hall Council Chambers, which included a large delegation from St Pol, and representatives from Warstein, Hebden Royd Town Council, Hebden Bridge and District International Group and the CFFC.
Hebden Royd Mayor Councillor Christine Davenport said: “On behalf of Hebden Royd Town Council and the people of the area, I would like to thank Warstein and St Pol for their support. This is what twinning is all about - supporting each other in good times and bad times.”
The money came from Warstein residents, who started fundraising the day after Hebden Bridge first flooded on Friday, June 22.
The money from Warstein was presented to the CFFC by Annie Becker, but St Pol Mayor Didier Hochart said funds would be coming from France imminently. He said: “We have plans to give some money to Hebden Bridge, but the Germans are quicker to react than the French!”
Rachel Julian, from the CFFC, said all the money donated is going to go to Hebden Royd flood victims.
“It will go a long way to helping the people of Hebden Royd,” she added.
