Coun Christine Bampton-Smith has been awarded the BEM in the New Year Honours.

The longest-serving Hebden Royd Town Councillor (more than 20 years) was awarded the British Empire Medal, an honour that was brought out of abeyance last year for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, for “services to the community in Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale”.

Coun Bampton-Smith, of Mytholmroyd, said: “I am very humbled by the honour and I accept it as an acknowledgement of the work of parish councils and on behalf of all parish councillors, who give their time voluntarily and are the first tier of democracy.” She will receive her award from the Lord Lieutenant.
