Literary characters come to life on World Book Day
World Book Day at Riverside Junior School, Holme Street, Hebden Bridge.
Literary characters came to life as upper Calder Valley schools celebrated World Book Day.
Children dressed up as fictitious figures for the day and also took part in a variety of reading activities as they joined in the global literary event.
Youngsters brought in their favourite books to read with their friends and classmates.
Reading buddy schemes were set up where older pupils read a story with younger children.
Jo Mansfield, headteacher at Midgley School, said: “The children loved this and it is nice for the younger children to see the older ones as good role models in reading.”
Storytellers visited the schools and teachers swapped between classes to read to the different age groups.
Some of the more unusual activities included an “extreme reading” competition at Heptonstall School, where children were asked to send in a photo of them reading in an unconventional situation.
Examples included reading while skiing and sitting on top of a haystack.
The winners were Calum Wade, Noah Richardson-Boylan and Owen Ditchburn-Hughes. At Cornholme School, staff joined in with the dressing up by donning St Trinian’s themed outfits for the day.
Riverside Junior School pupils designed their own books and prizes were awarded to the winners.
At Castle Hill Primary School, Todmorden, pupils dressed as a creature or animal from their favourite book and a treasure hunt was held around the school.
At Hebden Bridge Library, early years librarian Ben Lawrence led a pre-bedtime story session in a specially created story tent.
Ben said: “The event was a huge success and we hope to deliver more bedtime events in the future.
“All the children brought their teddy bears and were really excited by the story tent.”
