THE Mayor of Hebden Royd stressed the benefits of learning a foreign language during an assembly at Calder High School.

Coun Scott Trickett and David Parry, from Hebden Bridge and District International Group, spoke to students about how picking up another language can open up career options.

Coun Trickett explained that his Mayoral theme is to promote language and international business.

He learned German as part of his engineering degree and that has led to a career of more than 20 years.

“I tried to encourage them about the benefits of thinking about a language, not just from a holiday perspective but how they could use it to further job opportunities,” he said.

“It was exceptionally well received. There were some very good questions.

“Hopefully I will get to do more of the same in the future.”

Cath Warwick, acting head of languages at Calder High School, thanked Coun Trickett and Mr Parry for coming to speak to the students.

“It was really good for the children to see that languages are being put into action,” she said.

“They can see them in a practical environment.

“Languages are important. They are more than just something to use on holiday.

“I have worked in industry with languages and I have seen the importance of them.”

During his visit, Coun Trickett also thanked the school for its support for his Mayor’s raffle.

“Calder High School have done a good job in raising funds,” he said.

“A big thanks to Carol Spillane for her help with that.”
