HAND cyclist Karen Darke and team mate Rachel Morris tried to share the bronze medal in Friday morning’s Paralympics road race at Brands Hatch.
Karen, of Mytholmroyd, and training partner Rachel crossed the finish line holding hands in the women’s individual H 1-3 road race.
They wanted to share the medal but Rachel was awarded third place after officials judged her wheel had crossed the line marginally before Karen’s in the photo finish.
Rachel, 33, who was injured when she was hit by a car during a race in July, paid tribute to Karen’s support and said it felt right to cross the line together.
Karen, 41, said: “We’ve worked so hard together over the last few years. We couldn’t bear the thought of pipping each other to the line.”
The duo joined hands with 50m of the race to go.
Although she missed out on a medal in this event, Karen did win silver in the time trial on Wednesday.
