Two upper Calder Valley community heroes have been recognised for their fantastic work in inspiring others in Calderdale.
Incredible Edible Todmorden’s Pam Warhurst CBE and Totally Locally’s Chris Sands received Inspire Awards at Calderdale College’s 2013 Graduation Ceremony, held at Halifax’s Victoria Theatre.
Chris Sands, director and founder of Totally Locally and organiser of the Valley of Lights Festival in the Calder Valley - one of the main reasons he got the award - said: “I feel really honoured and a bit shocked to receive this award. It means such a lot, especially to know work we have done has inspired people. It makes it all worthwhile.”
Pam, who received her award because of her work with IET, said: “Calderdale College has annual Inspire Awards and I have been really fortunate enough to have people in the college choose me to receive this year’s award. I’m absolutely flabbergasted that they have chosen me and I’m delighted that’s the case.
“I’m so pleased to accept it. The college is fantastic, it invests in young people and we’re here to learn from them but also to say ‘you can be inspirational as well. You can do Incredible Edible. You can just make up your own future and believe in yourself’.”
Also receiving an Inspire Award was Christopher Bailey OBE, Burberry chief creative officer, while other award winners were Calderdale College FD early years student Lindsey Jane Emerton who received the Outstanding Achievement Prize, and HNC public services student Ciaran Gilmartin who was named Inspirational Student.
Christopher said: “As someone lucky enough to have enjoyed the benefits of an amazing education, and to have found a vocation I love, I know first-hand what a huge difference higher education can make to your life. So it is an incredible honour to receive an Inspire Award from Calderdale College, which does such brilliant work to create opportunities through learning in the local community.”
Via its Twitter account, the college said: “A big thank you to everyone who made @CalderdaleCol #HigherEd Graduation a great success! #BeInspired.
