Indian dancers celebrate Queen’s diamond days

A TASTE of India entertained visitors to Holme Street Arts Centre, Hebden Bridge.

Dancers from the Annapurna Indian dance company based in Halifax showed traditional moves using hand gestures.

And there was chance for the community to get involved as part of the family event, funded by the Community Foundation for Calderdale, to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and celebrate diversity.

Shantha Rao, artistic director of the dance company, said: “The event had a beautiful mix of well-established as well as up-and-coming artists to celebrate the spirit of Commonwealth.”

Mrs Rao said the highlight of the event was Yorkshire storyteller Ian Clayton, who told the audience a selection of traditional Indian stories.

He has been working with her on a choreographic and research project funded by the Arts Council.

Traditional Indian dancer John Whittle, a professor at Lancaster University, took part. Dhol drummer Kalvidner Singh also played Indian flute, Ramya Chitloor danced and there was a lantern procession.
