Help us give canal a real spring clean

Canalside communities in Calderdale are being urged to head down to their local canal and help give it a spring clean for the new waterway season.

British Waterways, The Waterways Trust, Calderdale Council and Upper Calder Valley Renaissance have teamed up to arrange a Canal Activity Taster Day at a number of selected locations along the Rochdale Canal.

The community focused event is taking place this Sunday, April 15. The two hour sessions will start at 10.30am and again at 1pm and offer a great opportunity for some fresh air and gentle exercise.

The Todmorden and Hebden Royd area locations are as follows.

Walsden: Meeting point - canal side opposite Walsden Railway Station and behind Grandma Pollards Chip Shop. Activities will include towpath repairs, painting the lock fittings, pointing weir setts or cutting back vegetation.

Shaw Wood Lock 15, Shaw Wood Road: Meeting point - lock side. Ample parking close by in this exceptionally scenic location with plenty of opportunity for wildlife observation. Activities will be similar events to those at Walsden. A wild plant identification walk will start here at 2pm, lasting approximately 2 hours.

Brearley Lock 6, Brearley Lane, Mytholmroyd: Meeting point - lock side. Activities will include cutting back vegetation.
