A 39-year-old man from Halifax has been charged with using “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause those persons to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used against them” following an annual March for England event.

Richard Kemp, of Gibbet Street, has been charged, along with two others, following the event in Brighton on Sunday.

Kemp is set to appear at Brighton Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 22.

About 200 people took part in Sunday’s nationalist march and between 400 and 500 counter-protesters opposed the event, according to Sussex Police.

Of the 27 originally arrested, three people have been charged, 17 have been bailed, while three more have been released without charge and four have been cautioned or given fixed penalties.
