Giving our goodies a fresh start
Transition Town free day, April 2011
The Give Away Free Day held in Hebden Bridge on Saturday was a huge success and inspired people across the town not to dump their junk but to pass it on to others who can give it a whole new life.
Hebden Bridge Transition Town’s Waste Group was behind the all-day event which involved people leaving their unwanted belongings clearly labelled as free to take outside their homes so others could come by and help themselves to what they needed.
Goods which changed hands included a six-sleeper frame tent, a rabbit hutch, children’s car seats, lots of furniture, a computer printer, a bike and baby stuff. Other items up for grabs included a iron bath with feet and an old sailing dinghy.
The group had a stall in St George’s Square with a map that people could put stickers on showing where were good doorsteps to visit.
There was also a board with particular items offered. Feedback was really positive with some people putting things out for the start time of 10am and finding it had already gone by 10.30am.
“The day really showed that one person’s rubbish is someone else’s treasure. It was great to see so much useful stuff get recycled. As a society we throw too much away and see things as disposable when in fact they just end up in massive landfill sites.
“Passing things on to people who can use them not only saves money but it is much better for the environment.
“And it makes us come together more as a community as well,” said one of the group.
The organisers are considering making the day a regular event so watch the website in the coming months for details at hebdenbridgetransitiontown.org.uk
