LUDDENDEN witnessed a truly historic moment when John Smith was appointed as the village’s 150th mayor.

At a mayor making ceremony held outside the Lord Nelson, Luddenden, Mr Smith succeeded Craig Oates as the village’s main figurehead.

The celebrations also included a fun day, which attracted 300 people and raised over £2,000 for local groups and charities.

Mr Smith, who has chosen The Overgate Hospice as his mayoral charity, said: “It was a very good day, with a good turnout and we raised some money for charity.

“I am planning on quite a programme of events during my year, including a sponsored cycle ride and a sponsored walk, so it’s going to be a busy year.

“I am looking forward to my year as mayor and hopefully we can raise a lot of money for charity”

The fun day included an appearance from Elvis, stalls run by charities and local groups, face painting, and more.

The retiring mayor, Craig Oates, said: “The event was well supported and people really enjoyed it.”

Mr Oates also said that it was a privilege to have been mayor for the year and thanked everyone for their support.

The village committee meets once a month at the Lord Nelson on High Street and is always looking for more members. For meeting dates and times see the notice board outside the pub.
