Focus on healthy eating is the recipe for success
Head teacher Jo Mansfield with the school council and an award for healthy eating at Midgley Primary School
NUTRITIONAL meals are the order of the day at a village primary school which has been recognised for its focus on healthy eating.
Midgley School has been given a Healthy School Award for the work it has done to encourage children to pick healthier food for their meals and get more exercise.
Staff and the school council carried out a healthy school audit and decided to focus on four things: increasing uptake of school meals, encouraging children who bring packed lunches to pick healthy options, encouraging pupils to drink more water during the day, and promoting more active playtimes and lunchtimes.
Headteacher Jo Mansfield said she was pleased to receive the award.
“The school council has been heavily involved,” she said.
“We asked them what sort of things they would like to see.
“We are starting to buy water bottles for the reception class to encourage them to drink water.
“When we move into our new building, it will enable us to use more outdoor space.”
