Environment Agency urges residents to prepare for flooding as heavy rain persists

The Environment Agency has urged communities to be prepared if heavy rain leads to flooding tonight and into Monday.
The downpours have already seen flooding across the south east of England and the weather system is currently making its way northwards bringing torrential rain throughout Calderdale and West Yorkshire this evening.
Phil Younge, Flood Risk Manager at the Environment Agency, said: “We are expecting more flooding this evening and urge people to use the daylight hours to prepare for possible flooding tonight and into Monday.
“Our teams have been out around the clock over the last few days to minimise the risks and prepare for flooding. We are continuing to deploy teams across the country to warn communities at risk.

While heavy rain has seen river levels rise there is still no flood warning in place for the River Calder but saturated ground could lead to localised flooding.
There are currently 24 flood warnings across North, South and West Yorkshire and 30 flood alerts in place for Yorkshire and the North East. Further flood alerts and flood warnings may be issued, so communities are urged to be vigilant.
Emergency teams from the Environment Agency have been working over the weekend to monitor river levels, clear blockages from watercourses and operate pumping stations and washlands to try and manage river levels.
