End of era for local cricket team

A CRICKETING era ended in Mytholmroyd this week when the local 'Meths' team announced their decision to merge with Halifax Cricket Club.

The newly-formed club will play at the Meths' long-time home at Scout Road before switching to a new, county-size ground at Exley for the start of the 2006 season.

Mytholmroyd Meths, who celebrated their centenary a few years ago, have always played at Scout Road, but most of the team now live in Halifax. Only a few are locals.

The future of the club has hung in the balance since June when the local church decided to sell off the land.

"It's a sad situation regarding the history of the club, but it should be excellent as far as cricket goes," said vice captain Andy Hollingdrake.

The job of preserving the colourful history of Mytholmroyd Meths falls to Dr Peter Davies, Honorary Historian of Halifax Cricket League, who has received a 43,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to study the heritage of the sport in Calderdale.
