Denise puts up clock in memory of her late husband

A MYTHOLMROYD widow who lost her husband four years ago has erected a memorial with help from the town he grew up in.

The memorial, a large clock honouring popular Mytholmroyd man Cranley Martin, has been installed at the Grange Dene medical centre, Burnley Road in the centre of the village.

And while Cranley’s wife Denise Martin and sons may have been behind the idea for the clock, they say it is the help of everybody involved that has made it happen.

“It was a huge shock when Cranley died and we all miss him enormously”, said Denise, who lives in Midgley, “But to have him up there looking down whenever I am passing through means a lot.

“We have been very touched by how many people have remembered him and all the support we have been given.”

The stainless steel and blue plastic clock was designed by the couple’s eldest son Damian, a graphic designer, and was made with funds raised through the family, donations from the Mytholmroyd Gala, Royd Regeneration and many friends.

Cranley and Denise also used to run Cranley Martin Electrical Ltd on Cragg Road and they have been backed by several local businesses.

One even supplied two cherry pickers on the day to get the clock up.

The Grange Dene centre, completed in 2004, was one of the couple’s last jobs before Cranley’s death and Denise says it is a fitting place to leave the memorial.

The 57-year-old, said: “We were almost finished on it before Cranley died, and once the building was finished we always left a space for it.

“I’m just delighted to have it up and would like to say a big thank you toeverybody who has helped.

“I know Cranley would love it. ”

Cranley died aged 53 of a heart attack in 2004.
