LIFE is looking good for Claire Cowens, who is forging ahead with a career with animals after being treated for a rare form of cancer.

Claire, 24, who lives in Colden, was treated two years ago and is now in remission.

Doctors told her she would need to have regular checks for five years to monitor her progress.

In the meantime, she has successfully completed a BTec Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management, achieving the highest grades possible.

Not one to sit on her laurels, she is now saving up to pay for the cost of a study course in canine aggression and has high hopes of becoming an animal welfare inspector and running dog training courses. She is working at Sunnyview Kennels and Cattery, Kebs Road, Todmorden, to help pay for the course.

Claire’s grandparents, Stan and Jean Coleman, organised a bank holiday fun day at Hebden Bridge Methodist Church to raise money for the teenage cancer unit at Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield, where Claire was treated.

The specialist unit, one of just four across Great Britain, was opened 10 years ago and treats people aged 16 to 23. Funding cuts mean the Colemans are desperately keen to help as much as they can.

Mr Coleman said of his granddaughter: “She is a very bouncy girl - she never sits still. It was a difficult time when she became ill but we got through it. When you have a situation like that you just have the urge to give something back.”

As a result they set up the Hebden Bridge Teenage Cancer Appeal and have already raised several thousands of pounds for the unit.
