Luddenden Foot is set to take over the control of its civic centre after current owners Calderdale Council agreed to an asset transfer on a 30-year lease.

The keys to the building on Station Road will officially be handed over at 2pm on March 26, but the move will allow Luddenden Foot Community Association (LFCA) to apply for outside funding to raise the £400,000 to repair and modernise it.

Jill Smith-Moorhouse, LFCA member and former chair, said: “This is great news for all the present user groups and anyone else who needs a meeting place, as this is the last suitable building in the area and it will create a focal point for Luddenden Foot.”

The LFCA has been working on the asset transfer since 2005 when the building was under threat of closure due to long-standing under use and neglect.

Jill said: “This will give a great sense of achievement to all those who have been involved in this project, who look to the future and what this building can do for Luddenden Foot.

“LFCA will now be able to go to funders and raise the large amount of money needed to bring the building up to modern standards.

“An architect has been employed to show just what could be achieved.

“Ideas include a cafe, library and IT suite.

“Improved facilities will attract more interest and use necessary for rental income.

“The site of the centre benefits greatly from being next to Holmes Park. This is a fantastic local resource for sport, play groups and wildlife. Events are held there which improve community spirit and raise money for the project.”

Luddenden Foot ward councillor Simon Young said: “I’d urge everyone to go along and support a fantastic community asset.”
