Calendar of fresh valley views on sale
Kate Claughan and Vanessa Kay, launching the new 2013 Hebden Bridge Calendar, at the Book Case, Market Street, Hebden Bridge
TEXTILE designer Vanessa Kay turns her talents to photography each year to ensure Hebden Bridge offers a breath-taking calendar.
She took over the task from Geoff Boswell three years ago, sticking to his original layout and producing images from the Calder Valley as the seasons change.
The 2013 calendar is now on sale at outlets in and around the town, including the post office, Oasis, Spirals, The Bookcase, owned by Kate Claughan (pictured right with Vanessa) and Innovation.
Vanessa said: “I enjoy taking photos. We go walking as a family and, as we live at Blackshaw Head, it’s easy to get good pictures if the light is right.
“We get lovely sun rises and mists in the valley so I can just run out take a photograph from the front door. I’ve always got my camera with me so if we set off from home for a walk I can take pictures.
“There’s not a huge profit margin but I keep the tradition going. It’s one of those things that people expect to see and there’s a lot of regular customers.
“The people who tend to buy it are those who used to live here or who have visited in the past. Some people send them to relatives abroad.”
The calendar is printed by The Print Bureau in Albert Street, Hebden Bridge and costs £4.99.
Vanessa said Mr Boswell, of Cross Stone, compiled the calendar for about 18 years before she took over and she always makes sure he gets a copy.
