Bar to re-open after 9 months of flood hell
Nelson's Wine Bar, Hebden Bridge, is reopening after nine months after being severely damaged by flood water
The owner of a popular bar has spoken of her delight as she prepares to re-open for business, nine months after being flooded.
Nelsons Wine Bar, Hebden Bridge, will be back in business again from 5pm on Friday after having substantial funds spent on a re-fit.
Aterthe summer floods, the bar was left with water up to its ceiling, but thanks to the hard work of staff, the bar has made a full recovery.
Lou Millichamp, who has run the venue for 15 years, said: “It’s been devastating to have the bar closed for nine months. Everybody has worked so hard to get it back open again.
“People have said they have really missed us while we have been closed.
“I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support.
“I have really missed it and I just want to get the bar back open again.”
The business first flooded on Friday, June 22, 2012, while Lou was in Portugal. Staff worked hard to clear all the water out. They then spent over a week removing all the bar’s contents, before it flooded again in July.
With water going all the way up to the ceiling, it meant everything has had to be replaced. The building has had new walls, new flooring, a new bar, and new electric, heating and lighting systems.
Peg, who works at the bar and helped to clean up the mess after the floods, said: “It will be nice to be back. You get really attached to somewhere and I think it was devastating when it went.”
Lou said Nelsons would continue tohave monthly art exhibitions - this month will be eastern European artist Larissa, open mic nights on Sundays and will also serve vegetarian food.
While Nelsons has been closed, Lou has been operating a pop-up bar at the Hole In The Wall Pub on Hangingroyd Lane and she said that will continue to run.
“That has been brilliant for all of us,” she said. “It has kept us all in work and people have been very supportive.”
