Actresses' tribute to suffragette Lavena

TWO local professional actresses are paying homage to a Hebden Bridge suffragette during their latest play.

Olwen May, from Heptonstall, and Emma Kearney, from Mytholmroyd, are in rehearsal for Hebden Bridge-based Square Peg Productions version of Woven in the Fabric, a play by Anna Carlisle on the lives of Martha Crossley of Dean Clough, and Lavena Saltonstall, a suffragette from Hebden Bridge.

Olwen has performed extensively in the north of England, appearing regularly at the Library Theatre in Manchester and on Radio 4, while Emma has appeared at theatres in Manchester and has done radio and television work.

Square Peg Productions is a small, professional, not-for-profit theatre company, which presents productions funded by the Arts Council England, the Bearder Charity and Calderdale Council, and will present the fifth in its successful series of outdoor, site-specific plays on the theme of 'Unsung Northern Heroines'.

The performances, which will take place at the Halifax Festival, will start at 2pm from August 14 to 22, excluding August 16, at Square Chapel, Halifax and Halifax Minster.
