Calder Valley Organic Gardiners annual Potato Day at Church of the Good Shepherd, Mytholmroyd.

Hundreds of people attended a potato day in Mytholmroyd to celebrate the humble spud.

More than 30 varieties of potato were on show at the event at the Good Shepherd Church, giving gardeners and the general public a chance to learn about the different types available.

There were also information boards explaining the different varieties and a potato cafe.

Keith Williams, from the organisers Calder Valley Organic Gardeners, said: “We’ve been holding this event since the early 1990s and it’s great to show the versatility and different varieties of potato.

“There are 4,000 different types of potato and we had 30-odd varieties at the potato day which is great because you won’t find a lot of those in the supermarkets.

“It’s a staple of everybody’s diet – if you did it for tomatoes you wouldn’t get the same appeal.

“It was good to see so many people there, the car park was certainly full. We get a lot of keen gardeners and some buy quite big quantities to take away and grow in their own gardens.”

Stalls at the event included Blackbark Woodland Management, Mytholmroyd Community Bee Group and the Pextenement Cheese Company, which is based in Todmorden.

Sandra Evans, of Pextenement, said: “We sell our produce in markets around Calderdale but it’s good come to events like these.

“We hope that once people have a try they will come back again and become regular customers.”
