There was plenty going in the Calder Valley last weekend, with the chance to both mark the religious importance of Easter as well as events set up to entertain on the holiday.

On Good Friday there were good attendances at traditional Easter celebrations, Churches Together in Todmorden’s Walk of Witness included some open air hymns at the Peace Garden, followed by hot cross buns at St Mary’s Church and a messy church for children.

And St Mary’s welcomed Easter in with a special family Easter Light event on Saturday night.

In Hebden Bridge, visitors were able to join residents for the Way of the Cross procession organised by Hebden Royd Churches Together on Friday, while on Easter Sunday a special “Sonrise” celebration was held early in the morning up at Horsehold.

Todmorden Market traders on the indoor and outdoor markets ran a number of events to keep shoppers entertained, including donning their very best Easter bonnets, while up to Saturday children could collect a template drawing for the market’s “colour an Easter egg” competition. The judge - Todmorden Gang Show’s director and producer Rowena Goldthorpe - found it hard to choose as they were all so beautifully coloured, so all the entrants will receive an Easter Egg, these can be collected from the Crumbly Cheese stall in the indoor market hall.

And a four-day beer festival provided a chance to relax when Walsden Cricket and Bowling Club hosted their annual spring beer festival at the club’s Scott Street ground, from Thursday evening to late on Sunday.

Chairman Jon Green said: “Another successful beer festival and we hope to once again pass the £1,000 mark in funds raised for the club.

“The organisers would like to thank all the volunteers for their help, especially Ann and Jane in the kitchen for providing such wonderful food and, of course, all those who attended again this year.

“All the comments we received were positive and although attendance was down a little on last year, partially because of the Todmorden versus Walsden friendly on Saturday, we did get a few in on Sunday to sample the beers and enjoy some cricket.”
