Plans for a £2.7 million retirement complex in Hebden Bridge could create 120 local jobs according to developers McCarthy and Stone.

Calderdale Council has given the developer permission to build a 35-bedroom apartment block at the former Hangingroyd Mill on Victoria Road, with work - expected to take 13 months to complete - scheduled to start in August.

The complex will include 20 one-bedroom apartments, 15 two-bedroom apartments, a communal residents’ lounge, landscaping and an 18-space car park, and in its planning statement McCarthy and Stone vowed to use 60 local companies to complete the building work - creating more than 100 jobs.

Further jobs will be created once the apartments have been built.

The development has been welcomed by Calder Ward Councillor Janet Battye who believes it will fill a gap in the town’s housing market.

“This development will bring great benefits to the area, including the regeneration of a vacant Brownfield site which has become an eyesore for local residents,” said Coun Battye.

“I’m also happy that McCarthy and Stone has taken into account the views of local people during their consultation process. This development will provide much needed accommodation for older people in and around the area and will fill a gap in the provision of housing in Hebden Bridge.”

The plans also include space for a guest suite, refuse area and house manager’s office.

The minimum age for residents is 60, but their spouse can be as young as 55.

Steve Secker, Regional Managing Director at McCarthy & Stone said, “We’re delighted with Calderdale Council’s decision to approve our proposals. We’d also like to thank the local community for the amount of support we’ve received, which has helped shape our final plans.”
